Play episode

Tiara Darnell is the Owner and Executive Chef of Blaxicocina, Mexico City’s first and only Black-owned Soul Food restaurant.

Tiara’s culinary journey is deeply rooted in her ancestral traditions and family heritage. Growing up in Prince George’s County, Maryland, she learned the art of cooking from the matriarchs of her family, infusing each dish with love and tradition.

What started as a monthly Sunday Soul Food pop-up series in her home has blossomed into Blaxicocina, a beloved community space in the heart of Narvarte. Here, Tiara blends tried and true family recipes with Mexican ingredients and flavors, paying homage to the rich culinary tapestry of both her adopted home and her heritage.

But Tiara’s story doesn’t stop there. With roots in Portland, Oregon, and a transformative experience serving in the Peace Corps in Morocco, her culinary journey is a testament to the power of cross-cultural exchange and the universal language of food.

Join us as Tiara shares her insights on blending culinary traditions, building community, and finding belonging in unexpected places. Get ready to be inspired by her passion, creativity, and commitment to celebrating the delicious flavors of Mexico City while honoring her roots.
