Many digital nomads make their living by traveling around the country and sometimes the world as they work for a business or for themselves. While it is fun to see new places, it can be stressful at times and almost feel impossible to stay fit and healthy while changing time zones and juggling accommodations. As one of the Top 15 Black Expat Blogs, here at Blaxit Global, we love to see our people thrive, so we have some tips for how digital nomads can stay healthy and sane while on the road.
Find Ways to Get More Exercise
It is not uncommon for business travelers to get off the plane and go right to their hotel room or Airbnb to rest until it is time to go to sleep. However, that routine will not give you the physical fitness you need to stay strong and alert. It may seem difficult at first, but you must find ways to get active.
Try this:
1. Hit the Gym: Once you get settled in, start by going to the hotel gym for 20-30 minutes as you fit in some cardio and weights.
2. Get Moving Between Meetings: If you don’t have time for that, then try walking back and forth between meetings.
3. Ditch the Car: If possible, book accommodations that are centrally located so you don’t need a rental car and you can walk everywhere.
4. Stay Hydrated: It is also important to stay hydrated, so you can keep up your energy, and water will keep you full if you don’t have time to eat snacks throughout the day.
Bring Your Pet and Keep Them Safe
If you are a digital nomad that works completely on your own, then consider bringing your dog along for the journey. In addition to being a companion that can lift your spirits when you need it most, a pet could also help you to stay active and healthy. Dogs crave exercise, so take them and your laptop out to a park and throw the frisbee in between work tasks. You can also take a hike to get your blood flowing.
When you are traveling, it is important to keep your pet safe so they don’t get hurt or lost. Consider investing in a high-quality leash and most countries require that you have your pet fitted with a microchip. Also, on those long work days, keep them occupied with a nice bone or ball. Before you buy any pet products, it is important that you read reviews from unbiased sources. These reviews will tell you what is worth the cost, how long the product may last, and how it compares to competing products.
Get Plenty of Sleep
You may feel wired during an exceptionally exciting trip but it is still important that you get some quality sleep. That means fitting in seven to nine hours of sleep and waking up at the same time every morning so you can maintain your circadian rhythm. Sleep is necessary for the body and mind to function properly. Quality sleep helps us wake up feeling mentally refreshed and helps our bodies heal, especially our immune system so that you can fight jet lag and stave off illness.
Yogurt Anyone?
While we know that it is important to eat healthy during the trip, many digital nomads find it difficult to shop for healthy food. You can remedy that by grabbing a yogurt cup. Not only is yogurt delicious, but it is also good for your immune system. Be sure to grab one that’s high in probiotics. Plus, if you are traveling to another country where you are unsure how the food will affect your gut, you can usually find yogurt, as it is a staple food and can help your digestive system.
As you can see, there are many ways that you can fit health and fitness into your next trip. By walking whenever you can, drinking plenty of water, or bringing your pet along for the ride, you can get your work done and feel great.
